AmeriCorps is a volunteer service program run by the Corporation for National and Community Service. AmeriCorps volunteers may receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to thank them for their volunteer service.
The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is the same as the maximum Federal Pell Grant however it will be based on the current fiscal year not award year. The maximum award from Oct. 1, 2024 through Sept. 30, 2025 is $6,195. The full education award is provided in exchange for a year of full-time volunteer service, 1,700 hours over 12 consecutive months. Lower education award amounts are provided for part-time service. Volunteers may receive no more than the equivalent of two full education awards. Education awards may be used to pay for college costs or to repay federal and state student loans.
Education awards must be used within 7 years of the date the award is earned and will be reported as taxable income as they are used.
Education awards may be transferred to the volunteer’s children, step-children, grandchildren, step-grandchildren and foster children if the volunteer was age 55 or older at the time he or she began his or her volunteer service.
More than 100 colleges and universities will match the education awards of AmeriCorps volunteers.
