The routing and account number on a check are the bottom of the check. When looking at your personal check, look to the bottom and you will see 3 groupings of numbers. The first two groupings start with a character symbol that looks like a horizontal line following by a colon |:.
The grouping to far left is the routing number. It is a nine-digit numeric code that identifies a bank or credit union and is required for the electronic routing of funds from one bank or credit union to another. The second grouping is your bank account number, and the final last few numbers are the check number. The check number will be anywhere from 3-5 digits, depending on many checks you have written overtime. The check number is also written on the top of the check.
