To become a member of a credit union you generally need to have some specified affiliation, such as be a member of a certain group, work for a certain employer or live in a specific geography. Some credit unions will also allow you to become a member of their credit union if an immediate family member is a current member. However, you may be surprised to find out that some credit unions may allow you to join by simply opening an account. You just have to review their membership terms or give them a call to learn how to join.
If you meet the membership requirements, you simply need to open an account, typically a savings account to start, and your membership is established.
